The two-day state executive meeting started on Wednesday. A senior BJP leader who does not want to be named told ET, “By polls are discussed. Though dates of the by polls are not announced we are fully prepared to face the election in these seats”.
In the 126-member assembly BJP won 60 seats which is similar to the number it won five years ago. The Asom Gana Parishad won nine seats against 14 seats last time, while the new alliance partner, United People’s Party Liberal, got six seats.
Congress in this year’s assembly polls won 29 seats, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won 14 seats. Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won four seats and CPI(M) wrested one.
The BJP leader said, “The party is confident that it will win four seats on its own and two seats will go to its ally UPPL. The party on its own will touch the majority figure of 64.”
A section of BJP leaders wants the party to contest all the seats.
Recently Phanidhar Talukdar All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA from Bhabanipur seat had resigned from the assembly and joined BJP.
Soon after the polls Congress MLA from Mariani, Rupjyoti Kurmi resigned from the party and joined BJP, Congress leader Sushanta Borgohain in Assam joined BJP. Thowra MLA Borgohain resigned from the assembly.
Former chief minister and BJP MLA from Majuli Sarbananda Sonowal is inducted into the Union Cabinet and has filed nomination for Upper house seat from Assam. The polls to this seat will be on October 4.
Tamulpur constituency MLA, Leho Ram Boro of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) died of COVID-19. Gossaigaon MLA Majendra Narzary of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) died following post-Covid complications.
Congress had earlier alleged that BJP is nervous and wants to touch the figure of 64 in the house of 126 and once that is achieved it will snap ties with allies.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress stated that it has received allegations against 212 Party workers, who were found indulging in anti-party activities in the last Assam Assembly Election, 2021. The party state, “It is reported that 15 numbers of District Congress Committees have already submitted their allegations separately with the documental proofs”.
Bharat Chandra Narah Chairman, Disciplinary Action Committee of the APCC stated that the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has constituted a high level Enquiry Committee to look into the matter with the concern which will be later go thoroughly and properly to issue “Show Cause Notice” to those Party Workers who were involved in anti-party activities by helping the opposition candidates directly or indirectly in the last Assembly Election, 2021. “In the Show Cause Notice, the recipients were asked to submit their replies in support of their self-protection highlighting the cause why disciplinary action will not be taken against them by the Committee within a period of 15 days.”
