After the global outbreak of the coronavirus, pandemics came to the forefront of the attention of the World Health Organization (WHO) and all scientific institutions around the world.

Now, the WHO is warning of the potential risk of a new pandemic even more deadly than “COVID-19”.

Al-Masry Al-Youm outlines what was reported by WHO on the outbreak of a new pandemic globally, and the statements of the Egyptian Health and Population Ministry regarding the warning.

WHO warning

The Director-General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the world needs to be prepared for an outbreak “more deadly” than COVID-19.

Reuters said that Ghebreyesus’ remarks came during the annual decision-making meeting of the 194-member state assembly of the WHO in Geneva.

Ghebreyesus warned that the end of “COVID-19” as a global health emergency does not mean that the global health threat has ended.

The Director-General’s statement was made alongside the organization’s announcement of the launch of a new international pathogen surveillance network, to help further identify and respond to emerging disease threats using genomics.

Egyptian statement

After the WHO’s warning, the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population responded to clarify the statement via its official Facebook page.

Thethe ministry’s official spokesperson Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar explained, “The WHO has not categorically announced the emergence of a new pandemic, but rather warns that the danger of a pandemic still exists, and that the world must prepare for that and learn from the lessons of COVID-19.”
