Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen offered an update on the curious situation involving wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
“Internally, we’re working on some things,” Allen told reporters Tuesday, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “Not football-related. Stef, he’s my guy. I f—— love him. He’s a brother of mine. This does not work, what we’re doing here, without him.”
Allen spoke after Bills head coach Sean McDermott said he was “very concerned” Diggs apparently didn’t report to mandatory minicamp. However, Diggs’ agent and the Bills later confirmed the 29-year-old was at the team’s facility the past two days but left before Tuesday’s practice. The agent added Diggs “will be there for the entirety of the minicamp.”
Diggs famously confronted Allen and later defended such actions via Twitter after he recorded just four catches on 10 targets for 35 yards and no touchdowns in the 27-10 home playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals this past January. More recently, Bills star pass-rusher Von Miller defended Diggs late last month after the three-time Pro Bowl selection skipped voluntary organized team activities.
Allen said Tuesday issues regarding Diggs were related to “teamwork” and had “more to do than just football.” Jason Ounpraseuth of NESN suggested Diggs may want the Buffalo front office “to do more to upgrade the team’s offense,” such as possibly pursuing former Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.
“There’s things I could do better to help out with this process and try to get him back here and be the Buffalo Bill that he’s meant to be. . . . There are some things that could have gone better last year and didn’t,” Allen continued during the news conference. “I think, as an organization, maybe not communicating the right way with everything. Just trying to talk and listen at the same time, hear him out and just try to move this forward as quickly and respectfully as possible.”
Per Nick Shook of the league’s website, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said that Diggs wasn’t with the Bills on Tuesday afternoon because of “an in-house situation that they’re on the way to resolving.” Rapoport also reported the parties “sounded optimistic that the situation will be resolved” and that the matter has nothing to do with Diggs’ contract.
