With just months left for Madhya Pradesh assembly polls, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has launched another welfare scheme aimed at women voters. Speaking to ET in Jabalpur on the sidelines of the event, he said while Congress is promising, his government is delivering.

ON ‘FREEBIES’ BY BJP

None of these schemes is freebie. They are aimed at empowering women and will eventually bring social change. Kindly don’t term them dole. These schemes have elevated the status of women in society. There are studies showing that these measures improved education and nutrition among women.ON WOMEN-RELATED SCHEME
When I became CM, Madhya Pradesh’s sex ratio was skewed. Girls were considered a burden. So, I took up a mission to work for the girl child. We came up with several schemes, such as Laadli Laxmi Yojana (for education) and Mukhya Mantri Kanyadan Yojana (for marriage). During my tenure, the BJP government declared 50% reservation for women in local elections and in teaching and 30% in police force. Today, 56% of positions in local bodies are with women. We have levied only 1% stamp duty on property registered under a woman’s name, leading to a 45% jump in registrations. My sisters and nieces have always given me their support.

ON JABALPUR LAUNCH

We chose Jabalpur because it is called Sanskardhani (cultural centre) of Madhya Pradesh and is the main centre of Mahakaushal region. The scheme is for the entire state, we started it in Bhopal and now we transferred cash from here.

ON WOMEN VOTERS
If you improve a woman’s life, you improve the life of a family. Even before I became the chief minister, I provided all help for marriages of girls from poor families. As CM, I launched these schemes to bring about women empowerment. And I know this time, too, they will help me. After Congress came to power, the Kamal Nath government stopped all these schemes.ON CONGRESS SCHEMES
You need to understand that every state’s politics is different from others. We have a decades-old organisation here. Congress has promised a lot in the past, and we have seen how they discontinued our welfare schemes. These fake promises won’t sway voters. They’re promising while we are delivering.ON ‘ANTI-INCUMBENCY’
There is nothing against the government, people have always voted for us in large numbers. You go and look around the state, you won’t find any sentiment against the government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity and welfare schemes of the BJP government are well appreciated by voters.

‘MAMA’ TO ‘BHAIYA’ SWITCHOVER
I was called ‘mama’ because of the schemes started by me for the girl child. I worked for my nieces and now I’m working for my sisters (their mothers). My sisters and nieces will stand by me.
