SIBU (Nov 19): Tamin state constituency, which has about 16,700 voters, is expected to see a multi-cornered fight in the upcoming Sarawak 12th election.

Nonetheless, Tamin incumbent Christopher Gira Sambang, who is also Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Tamin Division chairman, welcomes the competition, saying: “the more, the merrier.”

“PRS Tamin Division is well prepared to face the coming state election.

“In fact, our preparation started since last year and has shifted to top gear,” he told reporters on the sidelines after officiating at Excellence Service Award 2020 for Selangau District Education Office (PPD) at Kingwood Hotel here today.

Gira recalled that there were about 14,000 voters back in 2016.

“Based on the latest information, we have about 16,700 voters now, where 98 per cent is Iban, while the rest are Malays, Melanaus and so on,” he said.

He said he had expected a multi-cornered fight with challenges likely coming from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) among others.

“But as far as PRS Tamin Division is concerned, I am prepared to defend the seat. The more, the merrier in the spirit of democracy,” he added.

Towards this end, Gira pointed out that he had to work hard since day one when he became the people’s representative for Tamin.

“I listen to people (on what they need). I did infrastructure developments including road connectivity in addition to agriculture and education among others,” he said.

In the 2016 Sarawak election, Gira defeated Simon Joseph Usau from PKR and independent candidate Dr Ali Puji.

He won with a 2,085 majority after polling 6,230 votes against Dr Ali’s 4,145 and Simon’s 954.

Sarawak state seats traditionally allocated to PRS are Baleh, Murum, Belaga, Pelagus, Ngemah, Kakus, Tamin, Samalaju, Batang Ai, Balai Ringin and Bukit Begunan.
