A 27-year-old man has died after an altercation with police in Toowoomba on Queensland’s Darling Downs.

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) said officers were called to Stone Street in the suburb of Wilsonton just after midday after receiving a call from the public about occupants of a vehicle “acting suspiciously”.

Assistant Commissioner Mike Condon said officers had confirmed the vehicle had been stolen.

Police said two people fled the scene.

“During an altercation with police, a 27-year-old male person became unconscious, whereby police immediately provided first aid,” Assistant Commissioner Condon said.

“Queensland Ambulance Service officers attended shortly after and continued to provide first aid, and sadly that 27-year-old male person has passed away.

“The scene has been secured and currently is being forensically examined.”

Assistant Commissioner Condon expressed condolences to the man’s family, saying the 27-year-old was from Queensland’s Western Downs region.

Assistant Commissioner Condon said he could not comment on how the man had become unconscious during the altercation with police.

“Those issues will be subject to the investigation by the Ethical Standards Command, overviewed by the state coroner and the Crime and Corruption Commission,” he said.

“The mere fact that it involved an altercation will necessitate that we investigate the use of force used by our officers.”

Two police officers received treatment at St Vincent’s Hospital in Toowoomba for breathing difficulties and minor injuries.

Assistant Commissioner Condon said it was hard to say how long the investigation would take but it would be expedited.

Police have appealed for any members of the public with mobile phone or security camera footage to come forward.
