The Cleveland Browns offense has already battled a bevy of injuries to key players this fall, and the latest reports on Thursday perhaps make their most important piece’s status worth a closer look too.
According to ESPN staff writer Jake Trotter, Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has been playing with a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder after suffering the injury during the team’s Week 2 victory over the Houston Texans. The injury occurred after Mayfield threw an interception and, on the ensuing return, tried to make a tackle.
The 2018 first overall pick was spotted wearing a harness over his non-throwing shoulder during Wednesday’s practice but told reporters that it “shouldn’t” impact his throwing.
While the Browns have mostly stuck to their “ground and pound” style of offense behind Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt at running back — Mayfield has averaged 28.25 passing attempts per game in 2021 — the early-season injury to wide receiver Jarvis Landry has hindered the aerial attack. Three-time Pro Bowl wideout Odell Beckham Jr. missed the first two games of the campaign as he worked his way back from a torn ACL as well and has hauled in seven receptions for 104 yards and no touchdowns thus far.
The 3-1 Browns travel to face the 3-1 Los Angeles at 4:05 p.m. ET on Sunday.
