PARIS, July 31 (Xinhua) — Indonesian men’s singles No. 3 seed Jonatan Christie has been eliminated from the group stage at the Paris Olympics after losing in straight sets to India’s rising star Lakshya Sen 21-18, 21-12 on Wednesday.

In another blow to Indonesia, No. 9 seed Anthony Sinisuka Ginting was also knocked out after a loss to France’s Toma Junior Popov.

Reflecting on his win, Popov credited the home crowd for their support. “The crowd pushed me a lot, especially at the end of the second set. That’s why I was able to turn it around,” he said.

In the women’s singles, Chinese Taipei’s No. 3 seed and Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Tai Tzu-ying saw her campaign come to an end after a defeat to former world No. 1 Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in Group E.

The men’s doubles knockout draw, conducted on Wednesday afternoon, sees top-seeded Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang pitted against Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto. In the top half of the draw, No. 3 seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty of India will compete against Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.

In the bottom half, the No. 2 seeded Danish pair of Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen will play alongside South Korea’s Kang Min-hyuk and Seo Seung-jae, Thailand’s Supak Jomkoh and Kittinupong Kedren, and reigning Olympic champions from Chinese Taipei, Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin, in the quarterfinals.
