A group of advocates in the High Court demanded action against the chief minister which was declined by the division bench of Chief Justice AA Kureshi and Justice SG Chattopadhyay. The group of advocates have moved the High court citing contempt of Court by the chief minister.
Advocate General Siddhartha Shankar Dey argued that the statement of the chief minister was misinterpreted and presented to gain political mileage. Screenshots of the chief minister’s statement in social media were produced in the court.
The chief minister in social media had stated “The reporting of my speech on 25/9/21 is being twisted and wrongly reported to some print and electronic media to project disregard to the judiciary and judicial institutions. I firmly and unequivocally clarify that I hold all the judicial institutions in highest esteem and also am duty bound to uphold the majesty of the judiciary”.
He added, “I have not told the officers or even remotely intended to convey any message to disregard courts or disrespect court orders as reported. My words have been published out of context,” the statement reads.
In the video the Chief Minister while addressing the 26th biennial conference of TCS Officers at Rabindra Bhavan said that he will deal with cases of contempt. Deb said, “the Court may give the order but who will comply with the order is the police, police is under me”.
