Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 is set to kick off at 10 AM PT local time (10:30 PM IST) on Monday (June 10), with speculations running high on the iOS 18. Here are the top forecasted features of the much-awaited operating system.

1)    Rich Communication Services (RCS) Support: Reimagining SMS

RCS offers features currently missing in SMS texting, including read receipts, typing indicators, higher resolution photos and videos, audio messages, Wi-Fi messaging, and potentially end-to-end encryption. It will also enable seamless cross-platform messaging between Android and iOS devices.

During the WWDC 2024, Apple is rumoured to introduce AI-powered software to create custom emojis based on what users are texting, beyond the catalogue of options that is currently offered.

3)    Autogenerated Playlists on Apple Music

Apple is expected to bring an auto-generated playlist feature powered by OpenAI to the Apple Music app. The feature will reportedly create customisable playlists with songs that have been selected based on the user’s listening preferences, similar to Spotify.

4)    A smarter and livelier Siri

Apple’s Siri is expected to see major modifications, with the integration of ChatGPT-style large language model (LLM) technology into the voice assistant. Siri is expected to be smarter, more conversational, and capable of interacting with your device and apps in newer ways than before.

5)    Topographic Maps and Custom Route Creation

Apple will reportedly introduce topographic maps to iOS 18, which will feature detailed trails, elevation contours, and landmarks, particularly beneficial for outdoor enthusiasts. The expected custom route creation feature would enable iPhone users to design their own specific routes on Apple Maps for trips.

6)    Non-Grid App Layout and Colour Changing Icons

With iOS 18, users will reportedly be able to freely place app icons and widgets anywhere on the screen, breaking free from the rigid grid layout. Furthermore, iPhone owners will be able to change the colour of app icons system-wide, offering a new level of visual customisation.
