JERUSALEM, July 4 (Xinhua) — The Israeli Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure announced on Tuesday the construction of a submarine cable to transmit electricity along the country’s western Mediterranean coast.
The proposed 150-km cable will run from the southern city of Ashkelon to the northern city of Haifa to mostly transmit the electricity generated through renewable energy sources in the south to cities in the center and north, according to a statement issued by the ministry.
The cable is also planned to connect the Israeli electricity grid to Europe and Asia through the 1,208 km-long EuroAsia Interconnector which began construction last year and will connect Israel, Cyprus and Greece.
The Israeli cable will also enable a connection to Egypt as well as to the Gulf countries through Jordan, just along the Tracks for Regional Peace, an initiative Israel has been promoting to link the country with its Arab neighbors by building a rail line.
