The opposition Kuomintang (KMT) pledged to serve as a bridge between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait as it announced Wednesday that vice Chair Andrew Hsia will head to Xiamen in China to attend the annual Straits Forum.
In a statement, the KMT said Hsia will leave Taiwan on June 16 with a delegation of ranking party officials to take part in the 15th forum June 16-17. They are scheduled to return on June 19.
The KMT said that it was committed to continuing to act as a bridge between Taiwan and China to protect the interests of Taiwanese people there at a time when two-way communication channels remain blocked and issues related to flights and travel remain unresolved.
It was also willing to assume the responsibility of helping rekindle cross-strait dialogue on key issues of mutual concern, the statement said.
Over the past 15 years, the forum has proven itself to be an effective platform in promoting exchanges across the Taiwan Strait, the party said.
