A section of the Congress has started pushing for a larger role for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, arguing her “talents” cannot anymore be wasted in the slippery politics of Uttar Pradesh, even as multiple power centres and all-out lobbying have delayed the keenly awaited constitution of the Congress Working Committee and All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretariat by party president Mallikarjun Kharge.

The section argues that time has come for Vadra to be given an organisational post that should no more confine her role to just one state. It has, therefore, floated the idea of creating a vice president or working president’s post for her elevation. It pointed out that while Sonia Gandhi started off straight as Congress president, Rahul made his organisational debut as AICC general secretary in-charge of Youth Congress and NSUI.

Even as Vadra’s four year stint as AICC general secretary in-charge of UP witnessed the party fortunes in the state in both Lok Sabha and assembly polls hitting a record low, this section is also trying to position her as a “seasoned campaigner” across states. As Congress circles are also abuzz with talks of a tug-of-war for the coveted post of AICC general secretary (organisation), some sections argue that Vadra can be persuaded to handle that assignment as well if an amicable solution is not reached among the aspirants.
