CAIRO, Egypt: Russia’s Consulate-General in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Hurghada announced that a Russian citizen was killed in a shark attack near a beach in the city.
In a statement, Egypt’s Environment Ministry said on Facebook that a tiger shark was responsible for the death, but gave no further details.
The statement added that a team from the ministry and other authorities captured the shark, and local authorities have issued a ban on swimming, snorkeling and other water sports at several beaches near the site of the incident.
Russia’s TASS news agency said the person killed was a Russian man born in 1999 who was not a tourist and lived in Egypt.
In a statement posted on Telegram, the consulate urged Russian tourists to be vigilant when in the water and adhere to any swimming bans imposed by local authorities.
