Congress will launch its campaign for Madhya Pradesh assembly polls from Jabalpur on Monday. Following its Karnataka template, the Opposition party will focus on five promises and the old pension scheme (OPS).

Days after chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched Laadli Behna Yojana, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will launch the party’s campaign by addressing a public rally in Jabalpur. She is expected to play a larger role as the campaign progresses.

Rajya Sabha MP from the state and local leader Vivek Tankha said the party was launching its campaign from the Mahakaushal region as it played a major role in Congress’ victory last time. “With Priyanka Gandhi’s rally from Jabalpur, the epicentre of Mahakaushal region, we are launching our campaign for the Madhya Pradesh assembly polls,” Tankha told ET.

Congress campaign will focus on five promises announced by PCC chief Kamal Nath including free electricity, waiving off farm loans, `1,500 per month to women and few other welfare measures, Tankha said.

“Priyankaji will play a larger role in our campaigning. She has admirers among all sections of society but has special appeal among women voters,” he said.

Besides five promises, Taknha said OPS will also be one of its major poll planks. Tankha said the Mahakaushal region has been “totally neglected by the Shivrajji’s government and there is not a single minister in the state government from this region”.In 2018 assembly polls, Congress won 24 of the 38 assembly seats in the region, while BJP could only manage 13.
