HAVANA, June 8 (Xinhua) — The 2023 International Weightlifting Federation Grand Prix kicked off Thursday at Havana’s Pabexpo exhibition center.

Running through June 18, it is a qualification event for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games next year.

Addressing the audience during the opening ceremony, Mohammed Jalood, president of the International Weightlifting Federation, voiced confidence in the success of the event, praising the hospitality of the Cuban people.

“Many of the athletes that will shine next year are also here, in this nation with a strong tradition in our beloved sport,” he said.

“The performances of our athletes, their fair play and talent, but also their motivation to get a precious Olympic ticket will show once more that weightlifting fully deserves its place in the Olympic program,” he added.

Held for the first time in the Cuban capital, the grand prix have gathered over 270 athletes from more than 50 countries and regions, largely from the United States, Cuba, Canada, Egypt and Guatemala.
