Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is taking control of offensive meetings by using pop quizzes.

“Players need to pay attention because Rodgers will go around the room quizzing players from the various position groups,” wrote Rich Cimini of ESPN. “He will ask a player his assignment on a particular play, then change it up by testing the same player on how he would adjust if the play gets changed.”

Rodgers is making it clear that he is the captain of the offense, and he wants his teammates to follow his lead.

It’s not a surprise to see the former Packers QB take control of the Jets offense because he wanted more input in Green Bay and criticized Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. Rodgers once said Lafleur’s system “has flaws.”

One reason New York attracted Rodgers as a trade destination is offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who was a former Packers OC from 2019 to 2021 and is a close friend of the QB.

During his introductory news conference, Rodgers said, “I love him like a brother.” So Hackett letting Rodgers frequently interject during meetings makes sense. Also, Rodgers said he gets “a lot of latitude” from Hackett, per Cimini.

Rodgers is a four-time league MVP and Super Bowl champion which is why the Jets cater to him. There’s a precedent for new teams accepting the demands of their veteran QBs. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady received similar privileges with the Broncos and Buccaneers.

The Jets gave Rodgers what he wanted. Now, he must end a championship drought that’s lasted more than 50 years to cement his legacy in New York.
