NEW DELHI: Casper Ruud, the fourth seed from Norway, continued his impressive run at the French Open by advancing to the quarter-finals with a straight-set victory over Nicolas Jarry of Chile.
Ruud, last year’s runner-up at Roland Garros, defeated Jarry with a scoreline of 7-6 (7/3), 7-5, 7-5 in Paris.
In a rematch of their recent encounter at the Geneva Open, where Jarry emerged victorious in the quarter-finals, Ruud avenged his defeat and secured a place in the quarter-finals.

This win sets up a potential rematch of a contentious quarter-final clash from the 2022 French Open with Holger Rune.
The 24-year-old Ruud displayed his resilience in a closely contested first set, eventually prevailing in a tie-break.
Despite trailing by a break in both the second and third sets, he demonstrated his fighting spirit and managed to overcome Jarry, who is currently ranked 35th in the world.

“If we had gone five sets I don’t know how long we would have played,” said Ruud on court Philippe Chatrier.
“I have to thank my team for pushing me in practice. I did the work and physically I was ready for more.”
Despite initially holding a break advantage, Ruud faced a tough challenge from Jarry and was pushed into a tiebreak in the first set, which he managed to win comfortably.
However, Ruud seemed to lose momentum and found himself trailing 4-1 in the second set. Nonetheless, he regrouped and showcased his resilience, winning six out of the remaining seven games to put himself in a favorable position on the scoreboard.

Jarry, a lanky player from Chile, was participating in his first last-16 singles match at a Grand Slam tournament. Despite the deficit, he continued to fight and secured the first break in the third set.
With his powerful shots, Jarry remained a constant threat throughout the match. The outcome might have been different if the match had taken place on a smaller court, as Jarry’s formidable first serve would have posed a significant challenge for any player, including Ruud.
“It is probably the biggest clay court in the world, so it made the returns easier and safer,” said Ruud after the victory.
