Hong Kong universities should strengthen research and development collaborations with Chongqing institutions to speed up the application of advanced technologies, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said.
On the second day of his three-day trip to Chongqing, Lee visited a diagnostic laboratory and a biomedicine firm in Chongqing’s science town.
In a Facebook post yesterday, Lee said he visited the Western (Chongqing) Science City a national science and technology innovation centre with national influence.
Lee visited the Jinfeng Laboratory which was put into use mid-last year. The laboratory is committed to new diagnostic technologies for major diseases. It aims to be “a new model of municipal-level laboratories” and “a new driving force for national-level laboratories focusing on life health.”
Lee added: “A Chongqing medical technology company showed us the application of high-intensity focused ultrasound technology in medical treatment. Researchers told me the technology can be used outside human bodies to eliminate tumors without causing wounds. Hospitals in Hong Kong are also using this new technology.”
Lee said he also met with some medical professionals. “Dr Li Hiu-ming from the Chinese University’s Department of Anatomical and Cellular Pathology told me that he has been working on the exchange activities and training of mainland and CUHK doctors over the past decades, including arranging Chongqing doctors to further study or attend meetings in Hong Kong,” Lee said.
“The SAR government encourages exchanges of and collaborations on research, as well as laboratory construction between the universities in Hong Kong and Chongqing,” he added.
The authorities also support the universities and research institutions to build international scientific collaboration platforms, he said.
And Lee also visited Ciqikou Ancient Town a famous tourist site with archaic buildings. Lee was welcomed by local citizens and waved to them.
