A diver prepares to search for Mary in Sungai Tegan.

BELAGA (May 12): The search and rescue (SAR) operation for a woman feared to have drowned in Sungai Tegan, near the Belaga bridge entered its sixth day today with no clues as of 3pm.

Mary Sait, 31, from Rumah Sihan, Long Menamang, Belaga disappeared while hunting for river snails on Sunday.

SAR operation commander, Belaga fire station chief Helman Main, said the operation yesterday from 8am to 5pm covered a 30km radius from where she was last seen.

“The Water Rescue Team (PPDA) from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) also conducted two dives in the new focal area, but the victim has not been found yet,” he said today.

Besides Bomba, the SAR team includes police, Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela), and Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) personnel.

Bomba Zone 5 Bintulu chief Wan Kamarudin Wan Ahmad had previously said Belaga fire station personnel went to the scene on Sunday upon receiving a report around 5.25pm.

He said initial information received from eyewitnesses stated Mary had been searching for snails at the riverbank with her brother and sister-in-law prior to her disappearance.

She is said to have attempted to swim across the river to fetch a boat but began struggling in the middle of the river before being swept away by the strong current.
