The Vijayapura (Bijapur) parliamentary constituency has eight assembly constituencies. BJP had won 4 of them in 2018, with victory margins in most of these constituencies quite small.

Vijayapura

Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, the BJP MLA , has been a controversial figure, not just among the minority , but also among his own Lingayat community. He will be fighting against Abdul Hameed Mushrif of Congress again, having defeated him in the 2018 polls by 6,413 votes. JDS had fielded Bandenawaz Mahabari, but he withdrew his nomination and has asked people to support Congress.

Basavana Bagewadi

In 2018, Shivanand Patil of Congress defeated Somanagouda B Patil of JDS by a slim margin of 3,186 votes. Somanagouda Patil then joined BJP on the assurance that he would be given a ticket in the 2023 polls. However, BJP gave the ticket to SK Bellubi who was a BJP rebel who joined JDS in 2018 when he contested in Vijayapura. Irked over being denied a ticket, Somanagouda Patil is now the JDS candidate again.

Sindagi

BJP’s Ramesh Bhusanur won by more than 30,000 votes while defeating Congress candidate Ashok Managuli in 2021 bypolls. The two will be contesting this time as well. JDS has given a ticket to Vishalakshi Shivanand Patil, wife of the late Shivanand Patil.Muddebihal

BJP leader AS Patil Nadahalli defeated Congress candidate Appaji alias CS Nadagouda in the 2018 polls by 9,000 votes. The two parties have repeated the candidates. What makes it a triangular contest and one that may favour the BJP candidate is the presence of JDS candidate Channabasappa Sangappa Sollapura, who is likely to eat into the anti-BJP votes.

Nagthan (SC)

This seat saw a close contest in 2018 and 2023. Devanand Fulasing Chavan of JDS won in 2018 by getting 59,709 votes, his nearest challenger Congress candidate Vithal Katakadond got 54,108, while BJP’s Gopal Garjol got 53,562. Chavan and Katakadond have been repeated by their parties. BJP has given a ticket to Sanjeev Aihole.

Indi

Congress has repeated sitting MLA Yashvanth Rayagoud Patil. He will be taking on BD Patil of JDS who was defeated by a margin of 9,938 votes. BJP has put up Kasagouda Biradar.

Devara Hipparagi

In a triangular contest between BJP, Congress and JDS in 2018, BJP’s Somanagouda Patil Sasunur won by 6,000-odd votes against JDS candidate Raju Gowda Patil. BJP and JDS candidates are the same while Congress has fielded Sharanappa Sunagar.

Babaleshwar

Congress’ MB Patil, a Lingayat, is being widely seen to get a 4th term. BJP has fielded Vijugouda Patil again.
