The No. 3 Oregon Ducks are all but guaranteed to miss the College Football Playoff after a 38-7 loss to the No. 23 Utah Utes.

“Everybody’s upset and disappointed like we should be,” Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said after the loss, via ESPN. “It should burn. It should hurt a ton. Guys are competitors, and it’s hard too because we’ve taken a lot of pride in being resilient and being able to bounce back from adversity. And tonight, we didn’t do a good enough job.”

Oregon can still win the Pac-12 North by defeating in-state rival Oregon State on Saturday. The Ducks would then have an opportunity for a rematch with Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game. But given the team’s October loss to Stanford, a climb back into contention for a CFB Playoff berth is highly unlikely.

Utah jumped out to an early lead Saturday with lengthy touchdown drives in the first and second quarter. The Utes then launched out of reach by scoring two more touchdowns in the last 30 seconds of the first half. While Oregon cut into the lead with a touchdown early in the third quarter, the Ducks couldn’t sustain enough offense to ever threaten a comeback.

While Oregon stumbled Saturday, the other teams in contention for the CFB Playoff largely impressed. No. 4 Ohio State destroyed No. 7 Michigan State, 56-7, and No. 5 Cincinnati blew out SMU, 48-14.
