NEW DELHI: Senior advocate Deepinder Singh Patwalia has been appointed as the new advocate general (AG) of Punjab.
The government of Punjab made the announcement in an official notification published on Friday.

On November 9, Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi had accepted the resignation of the former advocate general APS Deol, after yielding to the pressure mounted by the state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu for replacing the state’s AG.
Sidhu had been pushing for his appointment as the state’s top law officer, and replacement of Deol who had represented former Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini in cases related to the 2015 post-sacrilege police firing incidents.
There had been unease between both Channi and Sidhu over the appointments of not just the advocate general but the DGP as well.
Sidhu had asked Punjab CM Channi to choose between ‘compromised’ officers or PCC chief (himself).
After stepping down as the Punjab Congress chief in September, Sidhu had put a precondition to resume charge the day a new advocate general was appointed.
