During her national stint at Femina Miss India 2018, we have seen her exhibit multiple talents and was crowned Femina Miss India United Continents 2018 at the event finale. However, we finally get to witness another forte – her acting skills. A dentist by profession is real life; Gayatri plays a doctor in the series as well. Much to her advantage, she could easily connect to her character Tara.
In a candid conversation, Gayatri recently opened up on her experience shooting for her debut series, working with the multi-faceted Bhuvan, her journey after Miss India, and much more. Excerpts.
The road to landing a perfect role in making a debut in Bollywood is challenging. However, your fans and followers have fallen in love with Dr. Tara. How was your experience shooting for ‘Dhindora’?
‘Dhindora’ was my first acting project, and as everybody else in this profession would tell you, it’s incredibly nerve-wracking. On the first day of the shoot, I was so nervous that I was given two mics as I wasn’t audible. I was that nervous. But as the days progressed, I got comfortable. The whole experience was just amazing.
Bagging over 20 million fans, Bhuvan has been entertaining the audience with his multi-character roles. So how was it watching him perform live?
It’s absolutely epic! He gets into that character’s skin in such a realistic manner, even the smallest of the things come to life. The way he switches from one person to another is such a treat to watch, and that’s precisely why people watch his shows.
Following your national win in 2018, you’ve been in Mumbai for a few years now, away from your family; how has your journey been post-winning Miss India?
In the one year of your reign, everything is given to you on a platter. You get a lot of recognition, but a year later, the crown is passed on to a new winner, and then you’re all your own. In these two years, I have learnt much more than what I learnt my entire life. Especially how to be consistent with my work, how to keep fighting, as every single day was a battle.
Trying to make a mark for myself in a city like Mumbai has been a journey of ups and downs. The two years that passed by is just a blur. I’ve been working and practicing my acting and modeling projects; there’s been so much happening that I did not have time to take a breather. But the COVID pandemic was the biggest break I could get, and I made the most out of it.
You have aced the ramp for so many fashion designers, so is modeling your passion or acting?
It started with clicking and posing for pictures at home or a family get-together. I loved being in front of the camera; I loved posing. But as I grew older, I realized that I liked playing versatile roles. When you essay a character, you explore so many sides of yourself and how you would react in those situations; it was just so satisfying.
While every newcomer has a tough time getting into the industry, did winning the national pageant help you with better opportunities?
I feel that ultimately for a producer to hire you for a film has nothing to do with who you are; it’s all about how good an actor you are. So what actually matters is your skill as an actor; it all comes down to that. But yes, of course, being a part of Miss India and winning the title gave me recognition, an identity that has a lot of bonus points, and it means a lot.
People do not realize that the crown comes at a great cost; you have worked your ass off to win that crown, there is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears behind it. And now, when I watch new pageant contenders, I see the dream in their eyes; they are so passionate about what they’re doing. People think it’s all hunky-dory, but there’s a lot of work that goes behind it.
Now let’s talk about what all your fans have been eagerly waiting to know. While we have already seen and loved Tara, could you brief us more about her? Is she very different, Gayatri?
To be honest, Tara is quite similar to Gayatri. She is a medical intern, and I was also once a medical intern, so wearing the coat just got me back to my college days and how it felt to take certain cases histories of patients and help them. So that’s one reason I instantly got into character, especially because this was my first performance as an actor. It helped me portray Tara beautifully; it was as real as it could be because that’s who I am, fun-loving, passionate. But of course, she is much fun with her perfect timing, but mostly who Tara is as a person is very similar to Gayatri.
Since you mentioned you like playing versatile roles and as Tara is quite similar to Gayatri, which is the one role you would love to portray if given a chance?
I would love to play Priyanka Chopra in ‘7 Khoon Maaf!’ She did a fabulous job. I don’t think I could do justice to it the way she did, but I would love to play such a part — it’s dark and thrilling.
But right now, there is so much happening in the entertainment industry, it’s evolving, and newcomers like me have so many options like there’s an audience for every genre. So that is really great for newcomers like me to explore different avenues because that’s what would make you a better actor.
Kudos to the queen, who has made it this far and is sure to reach greater heights with her zeal and hard work. So have you met Dr. Tara? If not,
