TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia has many talented athletes in various sports, including women’s doubles badminton players Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu who managed to bag the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
In order to push the development of the country’s sports sector, many sports schools exist throughout the archipelago. Here are six of them as follows:
- SMA Negeri Olahraga in Riau
The state-run sports school in Riau Province eyes to create children of Riau to be reliable athletes. Students willing to enter the school must pass a number of selection tests.
- SMA Negeri 9 Tunas Bangsa in Banda Aceh
Located in Aceh, the school has nine sports, including athletics, football, pencak silat, karate, taekwondo, volleyball, basketball, Kempo, and badminton.
- Special School for Sports (SKOI) in East Kalimantan
SKOI is a sports school that provides coaching and learning for students who are eager to become athletes. The enrollment process is carried out by the local Youth and Sports Agency.
- UPT SMA Olahraga (UPT SMANOR) in East Java
UPT SMANOR is the only public high school in East Java that integrates sports and academic programs for its students. The students receive several privileges, such as monthly pocket money, school uniforms, sports uniforms, dormitory, and meals.
The sports offered by the school include athletics, judo, wrestling, swimming, diving, pencak silat, sepak takraw, karate, rock climbing, and beach volleyball.
- SMA Olahraga Ragunan Jakarta
Ragunan sports high school, which was inaugurated on January 15, 1977, in Pasar Minggu of South Jakarta, has graduated several well-known Indonesian athletes, viz. Susi Susanti, Yuyuk Basuki, and Frederika Girsang.
A number of sports at the sports school include athletics, weightlifting, taekwondo, swimming, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, roller skating, fencing, boxing, badminton, tennis, diving, pencak silat, wrestling, judo, squash, and football.
- SMP-SMA Sriwijaya in Palembang
Sriwijaya sports school for junior and high school students are established on July 20, 2005, in Jakabaring, Palembang of South Sumatra. The school adopts a regular learning system and special exercises programs to hone students’ sports skills.
