At a time when BJP is reeling under crisis and facing defection, Balurghat MP Dr Sukanta Majumdar has been appointed the new state President, replacing Dilip Ghosh.

“My main aim is to strengthen the party in West Bengal. BJP is an ideology-based party. Our main focus is to stand by people,” Dr Sukanta Majumdar said. Dr Majumdar is a professor by profession and has a strong RSS background.

The newly appointed West Bengal State President Majumdar said that he is thankful to the central leadership for making him the new chief.

The outgoing President Dilip Ghosh has been appointed national vice-President of the party by BJP national president JP Nadda. The newly appointed party chief will take charge on Tuesday.

Dilip Ghosh took to Twitter and congratulated the new West Bengal BJP chief.

The party had done the change as the ruling Trinamool Congress is trying to poach BJP MPs and MLAs, specially from North Bengal where the party did well in last assembly polls.

The recent defection from the party was Asansol MP Babul Supriyo who held Dilip Ghosh responsible for the poll debacle in the recently concluded Assembly polls.

Some sections of BJP however, said Dilip Ghosh is replaced as his term was already completed. However, his replacement comes at a time, when the party is undergoing a crisis and witnessing defection.

ET has written in August that Dr Sukanta Majumdar’s name has been proposed as the new state President.

Dilip Ghosh has currently completed five and a half years term as state party President and was yet to complete one and half years. Known for expanding the party’s organizational skills in the state and immense hold on the grassroot level workers, Ghosh, a Kharagpur MP himself, was appreciated by the party central leadership for immense success in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in the state.

“The BJP is trying to bring out a new face and there is an attempt of image makeover inside the saffron camp with focus on North Bengal,” Poll analyst Mainak Pututundu said.
