“I thank Mamata didi, Abhishek Banerjee and TMC for giving me a chance in the ‘playing 11’,” Supriyo said, a day after his surprise induction into the party.
Supriyo was miffed after being dropped as a Union minister in the Cabinet reshuffle in July, just weeks after his loss in the recently West Bengal elections.
Following the Cabinet rejig, Supriyo announced his decision to quit politics but was persuaded by the BJP leadership to continue as its Lok Sabha member.
Talking about his decision to join the TMC, Supriyo said he has been in politics for seven years now and felt it was a good opportunity for public welfare.
The Asansol MP, who has often been at loggerheads with Mamata and her leaders, said he received love and support from a party with which he has had a tumultuous relationship.
Acknowledging the trolling on social media after his “re-entry” into politics, Supriyo said he felt this (joining TMC) was a good opportunity for public welfare
Speculation is now rife about the possibility of Supriyo being fielded for the Rajya Sabha seat recently vacated by TMC member Arpita Ghosh, who said she had resigned as she wanted to work for the party organisation.
On Saturday, after joining the TMC, Supriyo said he is excited about the new journey and will work for the development of West Bengal.
“When I had said two months back that I want to quit politics, I was serious about it. This new development took place in the last three-four days. So, after I got this opportunity, I decided to change my mind,” he had said.
“I am very excited about joining the TMC. I will work for the development of Bengal,” he said.
