Is there a team that can begin to break away from the pack? There are eight teams within two points at the top of the Premier League table entering the fifth matchday of the season which kicked off on Friday. Four of those eight teams will be going head-to-head.
West Ham (8th, 8pts) can overtake Manchester United (1st, 10pts) with a win at home on Sunday and it remains to be seen if the Red Devils’ midweek Champions League loss to Switzerland’s Young Boys will linger into EPL play. Cristiano Ronaldo & Co. will have two extra days of rest compared to West Ham, which played a Europa League match on Thursday in Croatia.
The other big match on Sunday will see two London rivals go at it. Tottenham (7th, 9pts) will look to bounce back from a 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace last weekend when Spurs welcome high-flying Chelsea (2nd, 10pts). These two teams were also busy on the European scene midweek, with Chelsea similarly enjoying two extra days of rest over Conference League participants Tottenham.

Another two Champions League teams, Liverpool (3rd, 10pts) and Manchester City (5th, 9pts), will be ready to capitalize on any slip-ups by those teams as they host Crystal Palace (11th, 5pts) and Southampton (14th, 3pts), respectively. Everton (4th, 10pts) will hope to keep up with the pacesetters on their trip to visit Aston Villa (12th, 4pts) on Saturday.
Norwich City (20th, 0pts) finds itself in the EPL cellar, but it can start to move up the table with a home game against fellow relegation candidates Watford (15th, 3pts). Two teams desperate for a first win of the season didn’t get it at St. James’ Park on Friday: Newcastle United and Leeds United drew 1-1 with Allan Saint-Maximin singlehandedly bringing the Magpies back from a home deficit.
