The Washington Football Team and the Giants are fighting for their first win of the 2021 tonight on “Thursday Night Football.”

After Ryan Fitzpatrick’s hip injury on Sunday, Washington’s Taylor Heinicke will make his first start since the 2020 NFL playoffs. Heinicke stepped in for Fitzpatrick against the Chargers, completing 11 of 15 passes for a total of 122 yards and a touchdown.

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones still needs to prove himself worthy of staying with the Giants after Sunday’s loss to the Broncos. Saquon Barkley’s performance last week was another letdown for the Giants — he rushed for just 26 yards on 10 carries and was questionable Thursday with a knee injury. 

Washington has lost to the Giants in its last five meetings, but enters Week 2 as a 3.5-point favorite in the NFC East matchup.

Final: Giants 29, Washington 30

11:41 p.m. — FIELD GOAL. The field goal attempt is now for 43 yards. Hopkins kick is good this time, and Washington gets their first win of the season at the last second.

11:40 p.m. — Hopkins comes out for Washington for a 48-yard field goal attempt. The kick is no good, but a flag is thrown for offsides on Giants defense. Hopkins gets a second attempt.

11:38 p.m. — McLaurin makes a catch for six yards, but the play goes under review. The catch is complete with nine seconds remaining.

11:37 p.m. — Humphries advances seven yards and goes out of bounds as Washington is now in field goal range after this first down.

11:36 p.m. — The Giants immediately called timeout after the players make it back on the field. No timeouts remain.

11:35 p.m. — Washington uses their final timeout while Washington is on third down and five yards with :28 seconds left.

11:34 p.m. — Giants call their second timeout with :39 seconds remaining. 

11:32 p.m. — A flag is thrown for a neutral zone infraction on the Giants’ Lorenzo Carter. Automatic first down and about three yards away from field goal territory. 

11:31 p.m. — McKissic is short by one-yard on third down for a quick Washington drive. McKissic redeems himself for a first down after the fourth down.

Giants 29, Washington 27

11:27 p.m. — FIELD GOAL. Pass incomplete to Shepard on third down. Being only one point down, the Giants field goal crew comes out for a 35-yard attempt. The kick is good for the 35th straight Giants field goal. 2:00 minutes remain, lots of time for Washington.

11:24 p.m. — The first turnover of the game finally comes. Bradberry intercepts Heinicke’s throw to McLaurin at the Washington 25-yard line. This is exactly what the Giants were looking for.

11:23 p.m. — The Giants take their first second half timeout with 2:22 remaining.

11:22 p.m. — The Washington crowd is excited. Gibson completes a first down for 11 yards with 3:13 remaining.

11:20 p.m. — An incomplete pass on third down for Slayton as he caught the ball out of bounds. The field goal unit comes out to punt as the Giants offense was not able to get to the field goal territory.

11:18 p.m. — Rudolph catches for a 13-yard gain and first down for New York. The Giants are feeling the pressure as the Washington crowd gets louder.

Giants 26, Washington 27

11:14 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN. Ricky Seals-Jones catches Heinicke’s throw in the endzone for a 19-yard touchdown. This was Seals-Jones’ first catch for Washington. The extra point is good, and Washington takes the lead with 4:33 remaining in the game.

11:14 p.m. — The first play for this Washington drive is a gain of 56-yards thanks to McKissic. They end up on New York’s 19-yard line.

11:09 p.m. — FIELD GOAL. Jones is wide open and attempts to rush for a first down, but is taken down on the 37-yard line. Field goal for 55-yards is good.

11:08 p.m. — A false start penalty is given to the Giants. Five yards are added to their third down, making it third and 10. This is followed by a second false start by the Giants and another five yards is added. New York’s sideline looked agitated. 

11:06 p.m. — Jones throws the ball to Slayton in the endzone, but Slayton cannot complete the catch. That could’ve almost sealed the deal for the Giants.

11:06 p.m. — Penny rushes one-yard for a Giants first down, then limps to the sideline.

11:04 p.m. — The Giants make a big statement with the ball back as Shepard completes a 21-yard pass for a first down.

Giants 23, Washington 20

11:00 p.m. — FIELD GOAL. Washington answers the Giants with a field goal of their own, making it a three-point game again.

10:57 p.m. — McLaurin is on fire this quarter. He completes another first down for a 10-yard gain. This was coincidentally his 10th catch of the game, tying his career high in a game.

10:56 p.m. — Heinicke attempts to run for the first down, but he trips causing the ball to be free for grabs. A penalty is thrown on Giants for defensive holding, so Washington gets out of that messy play.

10:54 p.m. — Two plays later, McLaurin completes another first down after a nine-yard gain ending on New York’s 45-yard line. 12:15 remains in the game.

10:53 p.m. — Washington is in need of a scoring drive. McLaurin starts out strong with an 18-yard gain ending on Washington’s 43-yard line.

10:49 p.m. — FIELD GOAL. The Giants attempt a 52-yard field goal, and it is successful. Giants add to their score early this quarter.

10:48 p.m. — The final quarter starts with a Jones sack made by Kendall Fuller for a loss of six yards for third down. There has yet to be a turnover for either team this game.

End of third quarter: Giants 20, Washington 17

10:44 p.m. — A penalty is called on Billy Price of the Giants for ineligible downfield pass. A five-yard penalty is added to the Giants’ first down attempt.

10:43 p.m. — The Giants follow up with another first down, this one for 21 yards. They end up on Washington’s 41-yard line.

10:42 p.m. — On the Giants first drive back with the ball, Slayton makes a gain of 13 yards for a first down.

10:37 p.m. — FIELD GOAL. Heinicke’s rush is unsuccessful as the field goal unit attempts a 49-yard field goal. The kick is good, right down the middle, with 1:30 left in the third quarter.

10:36 p.m. — Cosmi gets another flag for holding, resulting in a replay of Washington’s third down but now for 17 yards. The catch was short originally.

10:34 p.m. — Gibson picks up 14 yards for another Washington first down.

10:33 p.m. — A flag is thrown for pass interference on James Bradberry. Joe Judge appears upset on the sidelines based on this call. Automatic first down for Washington.

10:26 p.m. — Shepard makes up for his loss of yards with a first down as he advances the 19 yards the Giants needed. They end up on Washington’s 33-yard line.

10:25 p.m. — Shepard is tackled for a loss of nine yards as the Giants try for second and 19 yards.

10:24 p.m. — A flag is thrown on Washington’s Kendall Fuller for pass interference. The Giants receive an automatic first down.

10:19 p.m. — Washington loses the ball after only gaining eight yards on three plays.

10:16 p.m. — During the receiving play, Washington’s John Bates is flagged for illegal double-team block causing the team to be placed at their 10-yard line.

10:10 p.m. — Giants receive an automatic first down after Washington’s Landon Collins is flagged for holding.

10:07 p.m. — Chase Young is flagged for neutral zone infraction, giving the Giants a five-yard gain. 

10:06 p.m. — The first play of the second half is a 17-yard gain and first down caught by Shepard for the Giants to get to their 42-yard line.

10:05 p.m. — The second half kicks off with the Giants receiving the ball as they are trying to take back their lead.

9:48 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN. McKissic rushes the ball in for Washington’s second scoring play of the game. :21 seconds remain in the half. Extra point is good.

9:47 p.m. — Giants call their third and final timeout with Washington on third-and-goal on the 2-yard line.

9:44 p.m. — McLaurin catches the ball for a 10-yard gain and ends up on the 11-yard line with :39 seconds remaining in the half.

9:44 p.m. — Washington has a successful first yard drive attempt as they inch closer to the redzone. 

9:43 p.m. — McKissic was ruled one-yard short. Washington is on third down on the New York 29-yard line.

9:42 p.m. — Washington’s J.D. McKissic trips around the first down line, so the play goes under review. 

9:38 p.m. — As the clock ticks towards the two-minute warning, Adam Humphries advances 12 more yards for Washington as they enter New York’s territory.

9:34 p.m. — FIELD GOAL. Graham Gano’s 23-yard field goal is good for three more Giants points.

9:33 p.m. — Shepard advances six yards, but it isn’t enough for a Giants touchdown. New York brings out their kicking squad.

9:29 p.m. — Jones runs for 36 yards making it into the end zone, but the touchdown is called back after a hold is called on Giants’ C.J. Board. The Giants end up on Washington’s 22-yard line.

9:28 p.m. — Elijhaa Penny completes his first drive of 2021 resulting in a Giants first down. This is the first Giants first down this quarter.

9:27 p.m. — Giants call their second timeout before their third down and one-yard play.

9:22 p.m. — Cosmi’s penality makes getting a first down too tough for Washington. They lose the ball after three attempts.

9:20 p.m. — Washington’s Sam Cosmi flagged for roughness, getting a 15-yard penalty and making Washington have a first down and 22-yard attempt.

9:16 p.m. — Jonathan Allen gets his second sack of the night, taking down Jones on third down causing the Giants to lose the ball after a three and done drive.

9:06 p.m. — Washington opens up the second quarter with a failed third and one yard attempt. They went for the fourth down, then getting the first down.

9:02 p.m. — Terry McLaurin catches the ball for a gain of 12 yards and another Washington first down.

9:00 p.m. — Washington makes their first first down of the game. Dyami Brown makes the 22-yard catch.

8:55 p.m. — Down goes Jones on third down from a Chase Young assisted sack. The Giants lose the ball and get pushed out of field goal territory.

8:53 p.m. — Giants call their first timeout of the game.

8:51 p.m. — Barkley rushes for a 41-yard first down. This is the confidence the Giants needed.

8:47 p.m. — Gates is carted off the field with a lower leg injury. He received a round of applause from the crowd. This is a big loss for the Giants. 

8:45 p.m. — Play pauses as Giants center Nick Gates looks hurt on the field.

8:40 p.m. — Washingotn has another unsuccessful possession. Three downs and they’re done.

8:34 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN. Jones rushes in six yards for the first touchdown of the game. The Giants had 11 plays for 71 yards.

8:33 p.m. — Washington’s Chase Young is flagged for roughing the passer, automatic first down for the Giants.

8:32 p.m. — Jones takes matters into his own hands and runs for a 15-yard gain and first down. The Giants land on Washington’s 14-yard line.

8:30 p.m. — Jones’ sack is followed by a 12-yard first down pass caught by Sterling Shepard. The Giants are now in field goal territory.
