The Apple iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini make up two of the four smartphones part of the iPhone 13 series. Today, we saw Apple take centre-stage to discuss camera improvements, design changes and processing upgrades on its new flagships.

New design with better battery life

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini sport a redesign on the inside and out, with a durable flat-edge design and aluminium frame. They sport improved 6.1-inch and 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR displays respectively with a 20 per-cent smaller notch and Ceramic Shield protection. To further bolster their durability, they are both IP68 rated for water and dust resistance. On the back, both smartphones see a redesigned rear camera layout with diagonally arranged lenses.

Major battery life improvements are also possible thanks to more efficient components, a larger battery and deeper integration. According to Apple, this means two and a half more hours of use from the iPhone 13 compared to the iPhone 12 whereas the iPhone 13 mini will see up to an hour and a half more usage over the iPhone 12 mini.

Most advanced dual-camera system on an iPhone

Both smartphones exhibit a massive leap in camera performance with a dual 12MP camera setup. They feature a new wide camera capable of gathering 47 per-cent more light for less noise and brighter results. Moreover, sensor-shift OIS, a technology introduced on the iPhone 12 Pro Max last year now makes it to the wide camera of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. This makes shots more steady alongside a custom-designed ultrawide camera with a new sensor that captures more detail in dark areas of photos.

Above all, the biggest change with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini comes with video recording. They feature a new Cinematic mode allowing for automatic focus changes when capturing video. For further creative control, you can also change the focus of the video during and after a video has been captured, alongside the level of background blur making the iPhone 13 lineup the only device that can do so. All of this is enabled via the smartphones’ A15 Bionic chip and advanced machine learning algorithms.

A15 Bionic CPU

Powering the experience on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini is the A15 Bionic CPU. This uses 5nm technology and features a new 6-core CPU for 50 per-cent faster speeds alongside a 4-core GPU for 30 per-cent faster graphics compared to the competition.

Both smartphones also come with the new 16-core Neural Engine enabling faster machine learning computations and application experiences.

Pricing and availability

Both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini will be available in pink, blue, midnight, starlight and (PRODUCT)RED in a new entry-level capacity of 128GB as well as 256GB and 512GB capacities. Pre-orders for the smartphones start on September 17 at 4PM UAE time with the iPhone 13 starting at Dh3,399 and the iPhone 13 mini starting at Dh2,999.
