A 2-month-old infant is brought to the emergency department by his parents with a history of vomiting. The parents report that the infant began vomiting 4 days ago (a few times), then was better for 2 days, then started vomiting again approximately 16 hours ago with the most recent episode reported as bilious. The infant has no fever or change in bowel movements.
Vital Signs and Physical Examination
The patient’s vital signs and physical examination are normal. Blood work is ordered and complete blood cell count, basic metabolic panel, and urine analysis are normal. An upper gastrointestinal series is ordered.
