PUNE: April managed to shed its “cruellest” tag this summer in India as the country not only witnessed its coolest nights of the month in the past five years but also the coolest and wettest days after 2020, IMD data showed.
Experts said the unusual weather pattern of April and May this year has been an outlier. The April pattern seems to continue in May, too, with the first few days of this month witnessing a repeat of the unseasonable cool.
On Thursday, parts of north India, including Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Noida, experienced instances of fog due to an excess of moisture, lack of wind, and low night temperatures in May, the hottest month of the year.
The average maximum temperature this April in India was 34.1°Celsius, as against 35.3°C in 2022 and 34.5°C in 2021. April 2020 was a tad cooler than the month this year with an average day temperature of 33.9°C.
The average minimum temperature in India this April was 22.08°C, as against 23.5°C in 2022, 22.32°C in 2021, 22.36°C in 2020, 22.8°C in 2019 and 22.58°C in 2018.
India Meteorological Department director-general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra told TOI, “Multiple weather systems, including western disturbances, cyclonic circulation and wind discontinuity, have been affecting several parts of the country with simultaneous rainfall activity and thundershowers this summer.”
He, however, said day temperatures are expected to rise after a couple of days as a whole, though a fresh spell of rainfall was likely to commence over the plains of northwest India on May 6-7.
