SIBU (Nov 17): Lidam Assan has pledged to stand on a platform of education and socioeconomic improvements should he be nominated as the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for Katibas.

The 59-year-old, who is political secretary to the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, has been heavily tipped to represent Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) in the seat during the upcoming Sarawak election.

“I admit my name is often linked to be the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) potential candidate for Katibas. However, I will leave it to the party leadership to make the final decision,” he told Utusan Borneo when contacted.

Hailing from Nanga Tengadak, Katibas, Song, Lidam’s qualifications include a Master of Business Administration from Heriot-Watt University, Scotland and a Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) from Universiti Teknologi Mara.

“I came from a modest family and I know all about the importance of having proper education, which is so close to my heart,” he said.

Lidam has 26 years’ experience serving with Petronas Carigali and Petronas Dagangan.

On Monday, Nanta had strongly hinted that an incumbent from a state seat under his Kapit parliamentary constituency might be dropped by GPS for a new face.

The incumbents for the seats of Pelagus, Katibas, and Bukit Goram are Wilson Nyabong Ijang from Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), and PBB’s Dato Sri Ambrose Blikau Enturan and Jefferson Jamit Unyat respectively.

In the 2016 state election, Blikau secured 4,681 votes in Katibas to defeat Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) Paren Nyawi, who only managed to win 1,628 votes.
