What do Derek Carr’s wrist tattoos mean? How Raiders QB marks his faith with ink

Must Read

When Derek Carr flicks his tattooed right wrist to throw a pass as the Raiders’ quarterback, he’s always representing something dear to him.

Carr has a little body art that is well seen, whether he’s in the game or on the sidelines for Las Vegas. Although he’s been pretty good at football as a longtime NFL starter, Carr has made it clear that nothing is more important to him than his Christian faith.

That’s why he sports two tattoos, one on both wrists, to remind him and everyone else about that fact every day.

On his Carr’s right wrist, the symbol is called a Chi Rho, a christogram involving the two Greek letters that help form the Greek word “Christos” superimposed on each other. The use of the symbol dates back to Roman Emperor Constantine, who used it as a military standard (or emblem). There’s also an infinity element to the marking.

That’s balanced by the use of scripture on Carr’s left (non-throwing) wrist. It cites a verse from Biblical book Jeremiah (29:11), which reads like this: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Carr also has admitted it’s part of a tribute to a late beloved member of his family, his grandfather.

There’s no doubt Carr is one of the most devout and religious players in the entire NFL. Like many players in the league, he is using permanent ink to mark their faith to help inspire them as they suit up for every game.
