India-Canada nonstops resume from September 27 with stricter Covid testing rules

NEW DELHI: Canada will from Monday (Sept 27) allow resumption of directs flights from India, over five months after suspending the same during the deadly second Covid wave here. They will essentially be from Delhi to begin with.
Air India will have nonstops to both Toronto and Vancouver. Air Canada also has nonstops on these routes.
The Canadian government said passengers eligible to enter Canada and travelling on those flights will need to obtain a pre-departure negative Covid-19 molecular result from a test done at Delhi Airport’s Genestrings Laboratory within 18 hours before their scheduled departure. Passengers will need to “present the test report with a QR code issued by this laboratory to the air operator (airline) before boarding.
“Alternatively, travellers who have previously tested positive for Covid-19 can present a positive molecular test issued by a certified laboratory in India. The date of collection must have been between 14 and 180 days before their scheduled departure to Canada. Airlines will refuse boarding to any traveller who’s unable to meet these requirements,” the statement said.
Air India and Air Canada will be operating direct flights between the two countries.
For people traveling on indirect flights, the Canadian statement said: “Passengers who travel from India to Canada via an indirect route still need to provide a pre-departure negative Covid-19 molecular test result from a third country before continuing their journey to Canada.” It has advised travellers to choose the transit country with caution to avoid any problem during travel.
Air India got the formal communication from Canada in the early hours of Sunday. And the airline will be operating nonstops from Delhi to Toronto and Vancouver within hours of getting the mail. Canada took the decision after allowing Air Canada to operate three direct flights from Delhi on September 22 where passengers followed the ne testing rules and were also tested on arrival. Once satisfied that the new protocol is working, it allowed resumption of flights from Monday.
Since April 23, people from India are going to Canada via some other country. They are, and will continue to be, required to get a Covid negative test report from that transit country before taking off for their destination. From Sunday, direct flights will be allowed subject to the new measures put in place by Canada.
Air Canada has nonstops on Delhi-Toronto and Delhi-Vancouver routes. Air India flies to Canada direct from Delhi.
