Washington defensive end Chase Young was whistled for roughing Giants quarterback Daniel Jones in the first quarter of the teams’ “Thursday Night Football” game at FedExField. And boy, was Twitter upset.
While NFL Network commentator Troy Aikman agreed the play was a penalty — Young landed on Jones with his body weight — several people on social media felt otherwise, including former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz:
These roughing the passer penalties have to stop. They are so soft.

Savid Deen, who covers the Dolphins for the South Florida Sun Sentinel, also commented negatively, as did CBS Sports senior NFL writer Will Brinson:
Roughing the passer turns into a touchdown for the Giants. Saw that during the Dolphins-Pats game too.
We need a rule change.

Another absolute garbage roughing the passer call where officials are trying to determine intent with a flag.

More comments from the Twitter community:
That roughing the passer call on Chase Young just goes to show what type of game football is becoming.

There’s roughing the passer calls are so soft. Either let it go full force, or put flags on the QB already and make them untouchable.

I love how Troy Aikman is saying “yup, that’s definitely a penalty” and all of Twitter is screaming at their top of its collective lungs how weak and awful that call was. #TNF

Despite his penalty, Young had two tackles and half a sack after the first quarter. The Giants led 10-7 late in the first half.
